VIKINGS BRING HOME BRONZE AT PROVINCIAL TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS

The William Derby Vikings Track and Field team put together an unforgettable performance this past Friday and Saturday at the 2026 Provincial Track and Field Championships in Saskatoon, battling through heat, pressure, exhaustion, and fierce competition to capture the Bronze Medal as the 3rd overall 2A school in Saskatchewan with an impressive 132 team points.
The Vikings proved they belonged among the province’s elite, with athletes delivering multiple personal best performances and leaving absolutely everything on the field — blood, sweat, tears, and heart.
Leading the way for the Vikings was junior pole vaulter Cooper Hubick, who soared to a silver medal finish in the Junior Boys Pole Vault while also contributing to the Junior Boys 4x100 meter relay team.
The Vikings’ strength in pole vault was impossible to ignore, with strong performances across multiple age groups. DeWet Luus placed 6th in Senior Boys Pole Vault, Savana Wagner finished 5th in Senior Girls Pole Vault, Lincoln Martin placed 11th in Senior Boys Pole Vault, Gwen Martin earned 6th in Intermediate Girls Pole Vault, and Reed Flavel captured 5th in Junior Boys Pole Vault.
On the track, Vikings athletes battled through gruelling races and challenging conditions with determination and grit. Gwen Martin turned in an outstanding meet, placing 7th in the 3000 meter, 11th in the 1500 meter, 21st in the 800 meter, and helping the Intermediate Girls 4x100 meter relay to a 7th place finish.
Hunter Cronan showcased his versatility and speed with a 6th place finish in hurdles, 13th in both the 100 and 200 meter races, and also ran on the 7th place Intermediate Boys 4x100 meter relay team.
In the field events, Gabe Deagnon represented the Vikings with a 5th place finish in Senior Boys Long Jump and 9th in Triple Jump. Dana Youck added a strong performance in Intermediate Girls Long Jump with a 16th place finish.
Additional strong showings came from Connor Welch in the Junior Boys 400 meter and Savana Wagner in the Senior Girls 200 meter.
The Provincial Championships were more than medals and standings for the Vikings. They were about perseverance, teamwork, and pride. Athletes pushed through nerves, fatigue, sore muscles, and emotional highs and lows to represent William Derby with determination and class.
From early morning warmups to final events under the hot Saskatchewan sun, the Vikings proved that success is earned through commitment, resilience, and heart.
Congratulations to every William Derby Viking athlete, Ms Lowe, Mr McCreary and coaching crew on an incredible provincial performance and a well-earned Provincial Bronze Medal finish. Viking pride is alive!
